Your Exam

When you arrive for your first appointment, you'll be warmly greeted by a friendly staff member. Dr. Heher will personally escort you to a treatment room, where you'll discuss the reason for your visit, as well as your expectations and concerns. Then, we'll take digital X-rays for a comprehensive view of teeth and supporting structures.

Dr. Heher will thoroughly examine your head, neck, and jaw. He'll check your gums for signs of periodontal disease, assess your existing dental work for wear, and inspect each of your teeth for decay. An oral cancer screening using a VELscope is a standard part of each new patient exam and subsequent checkups. VELscope is a new high-tech system that uses a stream of concentrated light to identify suspicious tissue that may require follow-up. If needed, while he's examining your mouth, Dr. Heher will take pictures of your smile with an intraoral camera and display them for you on a chairside computer monitor.

After your exam, hopefully you will have no problems that will require treatment. However, if conditions are detected which might impact your health or smile, Dr. Heher will explain his findings and suggested treatment options. He's a proponent of conservative therapies and will recommend options for care that are in your best interest – ones he'd feel comfortable recommending to a member of his own family. We'll review our financial policy and schedule your next appointment, if applicable.
